Most people become eligible for Medicare at 65, but there are a few pathways and details worth knowing.
Eligible at 65
If you’re a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (5+ years), you’re generally eligible for Medicare at 65. If you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for about 10 years (40 quarters), your Part A is usually premium-free. Part B has a standard monthly premium for everyone.
Eligible before 65
You may qualify earlier if you’ve received Social Security Disability Insurance for 24 months, or if you have ALS or End-Stage Renal Disease, with their own timing rules.
Still working at 65?
If you have qualifying employer coverage through your or your spouse’s active job, you may be able to delay Part B without penalty and enroll later through a Special Enrollment Period. The right move depends on the employer’s size — worth a quick conversation before you decide. See How to Enroll.
