Enrolling in Medicare is more straightforward than it looks once you know the steps.
Step 1 — Know your window
For most people, sign up during your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period around your 65th birthday. Still working with employer coverage? You may delay Part B without penalty — confirm first. See Medicare Enrollment Periods.
Step 2 — Enroll in Parts A and B
You sign up for Original Medicare through Social Security — online at ssa.gov/medicare, by phone, or at a Social Security office. If you already receive Social Security benefits, you may be enrolled automatically.
Step 3 — Choose how to round out your coverage
This is the real decision: Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D, or a Medicare Advantage plan. Compare your doctors, prescriptions, and budget. Our Plans & Coverage pages explain every option, and the Plan G vs Plan N tool helps with the Medigap choice.
Step 4 — Enroll in your chosen plan
Once you’ve picked, we help you enroll in the right Advantage, Medigap, and/or Part D plan for your situation — at no cost to you.
