Turning 65 in Moab: Your Medicare Enrollment Timeline

Brian Penner

Turning 65 is the moment Medicare enters the picture for most people. The rules around when you sign up matter just as much as what you choose — miss a window and you can face penalties that last the rest of your life. Here’s how the timeline works, in plain English.

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your IEP is a 7-month window built around your 65th birthday: the three months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and the three months after. Signing up in the three months before your birthday month is usually best, because your coverage can start on the first day of your birthday month with no gap.

If you’re still working

If you (or your spouse) are still working and covered by a qualifying employer group health plan, you may be able to delay Part B without penalty and enroll later through a Special Enrollment Period. The details depend on your employer’s size and plan — this is exactly the kind of thing worth a quick local conversation before you decide.

Don’t overlook Part D

Even if you don’t take many prescriptions today, going without creditable drug coverage for too long triggers a permanent Part D late-enrollment penalty. A low-cost drug plan now can protect you from a higher premium later.

Why local matters in Grand County

The right plan depends on your health and your providers. Per the CDC PLACES 2023 county data, about 33% of Grand County adults live with high blood pressure and 11% with diabetes — both above many Colorado Western Slope counties. That makes a plan’s drug formulary and specialist network more important than the headline premium.

Your next step
